Adrenal Stress Index testing

When the adrenal glands become unable to keep up with the body’s stressors, they become insufficiently able to produce the hormones that enable the body to deal with stress.  Known as adrenal fatigue, this is very common among athletes and people who've undergone intense periods of stress.  Stress comes in many forms - whether it’s physical, mental or emotional - it all takes it’s toll on the adrenal glands.

Adrenal fatigue is grossly underdiagnosed, and nearly always completely missed by conventional medicine. Adrenal fatigue issues are difficult to diagnose with standard blood testing - however by putting the signs, symptoms and appropriate testing (in this case, saliva), we can establish a diagnosis, and start treatment.

Adrenal fatigue is a functional diagnosis - it’s not failure, which is known as Addison’s disease.  Adrenal fatigue exists on a spectrum, typically divided into Stage 1, 2 or 3 depending on the degree to which the hormones cortisol and DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) are produced.

As part of the saliva test kit, we'll run an Adrenal Stress Profile test.  Blood testing cannot accurately diagnose adrenal fatigue - it doesn’t offer the same sensitivity as a saliva test, and cortisol levels need to be measured 4 times daily in order to accurately measure adrenal function. It’s not practical (and highly stressful) to have your blood drawn 4 times in a single day to measure cortisol levels! This is why we use a saliva test to measure adrenal function.

Common Signs & Symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue:

  • Fatigue, despite plenty of sleep

  • Unrestorative sleep

  • Frequent wakening at night

  • Inability to recover from exercise

  • Aches and pains

  • Abdominal weight gain

  • Brain fog

  • Dizzy when standing up

  • Inability to cope with stress; stress leaves you feeling depleted

  • Frequent illness

  • Caffeine/sugar/simple carb dependent

  • Tired but wired (sleepy but can’t fall asleep)

The Adrenal Stress kit measures the hormones cortisol and DHEA-S (dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate).  When stressors outstrip the adrenal gland’s ability to produce these hormones, adrenal fatigue ensues as hormone production becomes irregular and out of balance.
